Hops

2025

Hops (2025) is a series of intricate photographs presenting the unexpected beauty of the flowering hops vine. The enlarged compositions of conical flowers, papery petals and serrated leaves reveal forms, structures and translucency of a plant typically only known as an ingredient for enhancing the taste and aroma of beer.

The specimens were collected in late summer 2025, peak flowering season, from vines growing in Sydney’s Inner West. In the darkroom, sheets of film were flattened in direct contact with vine cuttings, exposed to light and chemically processed.

The physical presence of the plant remains imprint on film, like a shadow. Rendered in black and white, on a single plane of focus, the striking tones emphasize both visible and hidden structures of the plant, offering a detail beyond the surface to explore the natural complexity.

Rooted in botanical and scientific inquiry, this visual exploration aims to foster a connection between the flowers in natural form, photography and the craft brewers at Hopsters.
